Endodontic Therapy: the Operating Microscope

چکیده
a variety of configurations and magnifications. With the aid of a fiberoptic headlamp system, light can be projected in the line of sight to prevent the creation of shadows in the surgical field and render optimal visualization of the treatment site. However, the magnification of loupes is limited (2.5 to 6.0 ) and their optics are convergent, which creates eye strain and fatigue. In order to address the limitations present in these devices, clinicians adopted new techniques and technologies. Otologists were the first medical specialists to utilize the operating microscope in a clinical environment. In 1921, Nylen performed a surgical procedure with the operating microscope. When Jannetta performed a procedure called microvascular decompression to treat trigeminal neuralgia, the event became the subject of controversy (to use or not to use the microscope) in the neurosurgical community. The surgical operating microscope (SOM) has been recently introduced in dentistry, specifically in endodontics, where increased magnification and illumination have resulted in improved technical accuracy and performance.

The Dental Operating Microscope
Endodontic therapy is performed in a naturally dark and confined working space. Operating microscopes were introduced into Endodontics in the early 1990s, and then into endodontic specialty programs in the United States. Since then, operating microscopes have become widely accepted by endodontists and are also increasingly being used by other specialists. The American Association of Endodontist...
متن کاملThe Impact of Operating Microscope on the Outcome of Endodontic Treatment Performed by Postgraduate Students
Aim of our study. To assess the impact of the operating microscope on the success rate of primary endodontic treatments performed by postgraduate students, during their training program in Endodontics. As null hypotheses we considered that the use of a dental operating microscope in cleaning and shaping the root canals has no statistically significant influence on the treatment outcome in non-s...
متن کاملEndodontic Management of Three-Canalled Mandibular Lateral Incisor Using Dental Operating Microscope
This case report presents endodontic management of a mandibular lateral incisor with three canals using surgical dental operating microscope. This study describes the root canal variation of mandibular lateral incisor and highlights the importance of surgical operating microscope in detecting an unusual canal morphology.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of knowledge of the internal anatomy of root canals for the success of endodontic treatment. Lack of knowledge of anatomic variations and their characteristics in different teeth has been pointed out as one of the main cause of endodontic therapy failure. Dental operating microscope plays a key role in the identification of canal and su...
متن کاملEndodontic treatment of a mandibular second premolar with four canals using operating microscope.
This clinical article presents and describes the endodontic treatment of a mandibular second premolar exhibiting a total of four separate root canals. This incidence in mandibular second premolars is particularly rare in the international endodontic literature. Only some infrequent cases of mandibular second premolars with four canals have been presented; however, this was done without the use ...
